Christianity and Secular Law

You can memorize the Bible and not understand it.

This is the state of what most loudly proclaims itself as Christianity in America (and throughout much of the world) today. Still stuck in law, as so much of Judaism was at the time of Christ, but in not quite the same way. It is NOT the task of the Christian Church to change laws or do the work of changing behaviors through the government--through enforcements and prohibitions. By all means vote. But don't vote for a candidate because they promise to force people who are not Christians to act the way you believe all Christians should act. Vote against such people. There is no value in forcing people who are not Christians to act as though they were. It creates anger, resentment, contempt. It drags the name and image and name of God through the mud, when we are asked to glorify God. Conversion leads to action. Action does not lead to conversion. It leads away from God.

What is central to the ministry of Christ is the particular and the personal. If you don't want Sheila to get an abortion, take care of her. Love her. Love that baby when it is born. Don't promise to do it. Sacrifice to do it. Pay with time and money to do it. Be someone she will trust to keep your word. If you are not that person, do not stand between her and the abortion clinic. Let her go. Her soul, her choice.
